Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka returns to tennis after taking maternity leave and has been given a wild card to the US Open.
The former world number one returned to the WTA Tour in January after giving birth to her first child in July 2023, but the 2018 and 2020 New York champion has failed to reach the four-point mark at any event this season one final.
Osaka revealed that while she did compete in the Tokyo Olympics in her native Japan, she “suffered a long-term depression” after withdrawing from the 2021 French Open and choosing not to compete at Wimbledon.
She compared her recent loss to Cincinnati Open qualifying to ‘postpartum’and wrote an emotional post on Instagram, saying the feeling “terrified” her.
She will perform at Flushing Meadows – live sky sports From August 26th to September 8th.
Bianca Andreescu, who won her first Grand Slam title at the 2019 US Open, and resurgent Amanda Anisimova are among the players to receive wildcards into the main draw.
Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka, 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem and Americans Chris Eubanks, Zachary Svaida, Lerner Tian and Matthew ·Forbes received a wild card into the men’s singles main draw.
Thiem, 30, announced he will retire at the end of the season after battling an ongoing wrist injury for much of the past three years.
The Austrian was ranked as high as No. 3 and is currently ranked 211th.
