A rescue mission is underway off the coast of Sicily after the British-flagged superyacht Bayes sank in freak weather early on Monday morning.
A cook on board died and his body has been found, according to Sicily’s civil protection agency.
About 15 people on board have been rescued, but six are still missing.
Professional divers from the Italian fire brigade resumed the search early on Tuesday morning.
Who is missing?
The names of five of the six people whose whereabouts are unknown have been released.
According to La Repubblica, the six missing include four British nationals and two Americans.
Italian newspaper Diario Sicilia reported that the passengers on board were mainly British, with citizens from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland and mixed Anglo-French ancestry.
Several people on board were involved in the recent trial of British businessman Mike Lynch, who was recently acquitted of fraud charges in the United States.
There were reports that the yacht trip was to celebrate Lynch’s acquittal.
Mike Lynch, British technology entrepreneur
Mr. Lynch is a technology entrepreneur who has been called “Britain’s Bill Gates” by some.
Born in Ireland and raised in Essex, he studied at Cambridge University before co-founding software company Autonomy in 1996.
The 59-year-old made his fortune when he sold the company to US tech giant HP in 2011 for $11bn (£8.6bn).
Following the acquisition, Mr. Lynch was embroiled in a decade-long legal battle. In June, he was acquitted in the United States on multiple fraud charges, for which he faced twenty years in prison.
He told BBC Radio 4 in August that he believed he had been able to prove his innocence in US courts because he was wealthy enough to pay the huge legal fees involved.
“As a British citizen you should not need funds to protect yourself,” he said.
Hannah Lynch, student
Mr. Lynch was traveling with his daughter Hannah, who also disappeared.
The 18-year-old girl is reportedly the younger of Mr Lynch’s two daughters.
She has just completed her A-levels and a degree in English from Oxford University, According to “The Times”.
Chris Movillo, Attorney
Chris Morvillo is a lawyer representing Mr Lynch at his trial in the United States. Since 2011, he has been a partner at Clifford Chance in New York.
His resume on the firm’s website shows he served as an associate attorney in the Southern District of New York from 1999 to 2005.
During his tenure, he was involved in the criminal investigation of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.
Jonathan Bloomer, Chairman of Morgan Stanley International
Jonathan Bloomer is chairman of Morgan Stanley International Bank and insurance company Hiscox.
The 70-year-old Briton was educated at Imperial College London and has previously served on several corporate boards.
According to the Financial Times, Mr Bloomer appeared as a defense witness for Mr Lynch. Media reports said the two were close friends.
Aki Hussain, Hiscox group chief executive since 2023, said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic incident.
“Our hearts go out to all those affected, especially our chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, who are also among those missing.”
Judy Blumer, Charity Trustee
Jonathan Bloomer’s wife Judy is also one of the six missing.
Ms Bloomer is listed, along with her husband, as a former director of property developer Change Real Estate.
She has been described as an “outstanding champion of women’s health” by the charity she works closely with.
Ms Bloomer has been a trustee of gynecological cancer research charity Eve Appeal for more than 20 years.
Athena Lamnisos, chief executive of the charity, said she was “devastated to hear the news that our very dear friend and her husband Jonathan were missing”.
She added in a statement: “Our thoughts are with Judy and Jonathan’s families and all those who are still waiting for news after this tragic event.”
Who was rescued?
The 15 people rescued included nine yacht crew members.
This means that all crew members are missing except for the cook, who local authorities say is dead.
Of the 15 people rescued, 8 have been sent to hospital.
A British mother, known locally as Charlotte Golunski, was traveling on a yacht with her partner and baby girl. All three people were rescued from the boat.
In an interview, she described holding her young daughter to the surface to save her from drowning.
Goronski is a partner at Mr Lynch’s firm, Invoke Capital, where she has worked since 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile.
She previously worked at Autonomy, the company at the center of Mr Lynch’s recent court case, The Times reported.
Another lawyer, Ella Ronald, was also reportedly rescued.
The New Zealander works for the law firm Clifford Chance, where Mr Movilo is a partner, and was part of the legal team for Mr Lynch’s trial in June.
her father told The Telegraph She was “invited to sail due to her recent success in a US court case”.
He said she texted him saying she and her partner were alive, but did not elaborate.
Angela Bacares, Mr Lynch’s wife and mother of Hannah Lynch, was also among those rescued.
On Monday, Ms. Bacares suffered a bruise on her foot and was confined to a wheelchair, La Repubblica reported.
