Have you ever thought about it How to make hot honey? This easy hot honey recipe requires only 3 simple ingredients and 10 minutes to create the most amazing sauce or condiment. It can be drizzled on everything from pizza to wings to anything you want!
With the holidays right around the corner, I thought I’d bring in another one of my favorite DIY gifts: this one Hot Honey Recipe! You can easily find hot honey in most grocery stores these days, but their markup is shocking when you can easily make it at home. Seriously, Mike’s Hot Honey is $13! You can do this for less.
I mentioned in my Sweet and Spicy Roasted Pecans post that everyone in my life will be receiving edible gifts this year and this hot honey is on the list. It’s perfect for drizzling on everything from pizza to avocado toast to chicken wings.
It can be used in place of any recipe that calls for honey but wants to add a little flavor. I love using it in salad dressings and marinades, but it can also be enjoyed with your favorite “dip” like chips, chicken fingers, or even veggies! Don’t ruin the honey trend until you try it.
Even better, you can try it at home with just 10 minutes and 3 simple ingredients. Trust me, you’re going to want this!
Ingredients for homemade hot honey
Honey – Any honey will work here. I like the flavor of clover or buckwheat honey, but really use any honey you want. It’s best to purchase from a local beekeeper to support the bee population in your area! We have a beekeeper who lives down the street from us and he generously gives us lots of honey.
red pepper flakes – Any dry chilli flakes can be used here. I prefer to just use basic crushed red pepper. You can also use fresh chili peppers, but be aware that if you do this you will definitely need to strain the hot honey. Since everyone’s heat preference is different, I added a range of dried red pepper flakes. If you find that hot honey requires more heat, you can always add more. If you find it too spicy, you can dilute it with regular honey.
apple cider vinegar – It’s not necessary, but the acidity helps balance the sweetness and heat. If you only have regular white vinegar, you can use that too.
How to make hot honey
Step 1: Heat the honey
Add honey and red pepper flakes to a medium saucepan and heat over medium heat until it begins to boil. This only takes a few minutes. Remove the pot from the heat and let the red pepper flakes sit in the honey for 10 minutes.
Step 2: Strain the honey (optional)
If desired, you can strain the hot honey through a fine mesh sieve, but this is not necessary.
Step 3: Storage
Try using hot honey and then add more chili flakes or dilute it with more honey. Note that if you leave the chili flakes in the honey, it will become spicier over time, so be careful when adding the chili flakes. Stir in apple cider vinegar.
How to use honey honey
On pizza – I think hot honey is becoming a trend because it’s so popular on pizza. It sounds weird to add honey on pizza, but trust me, it’s amazing!
Spread your wings and fly high – You can marinate the wings in the hot honey sauce or dip the wings in it.
as a marinade – Speaking of marinades, use honey to marinate any meat or vegetable.
Toast + Sandwich – Drizzle this honey on your avocado toast or your favorite sandwich.
salad dressing – Are there any sauces that require honey? Put hot honey instead!
as tea – Think lemon + honey water, but with a twist!
in cocktails – Have a cocktail that needs sweetener? Use this hot honey instead! I’m thinking of a hot honey hot toddy!
–>FAQ
No! It is not necessary to strain hot honey. Note that your hot honey will be spicier if you leave the chili flakes in, so when deciding how much spice to use, add less rather than more.
No, you don’t. This is optional, but the acidity helps break up some of the sweetness and spice.
It won’t taste exactly the same, but you can make a vegan version by using agave nectar instead of honey.
