A Los Angeles Police Department detective was charged with a hit-and-run a year after she rear-ended another car on the 5 Freeway while off-duty.
Prosecutors allege Detective Stephanie Carrillo, 47, crashed an unmarked Los Angeles Police Department vehicle into a civilian vehicle on May 3, 2023, causing damage to the rear of the vehicle. Both parties initially pulled over, but Carrillo allegedly returned to the vehicle and fled the scene of the accident, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Later that day, Carrillo filed a report with the California Highway Patrol station in Orange County saying she had been involved in a hit-and-run, the statement said.
“The irresponsible and unlawful conduct in law enforcement allegedly exhibited by Officer Carrillo not only violated the public trust, but also violated the oath law enforcement takes to protect the safety of the public,” Dist said. Atty. George Gascón. The incident was investigated by the CHP East Los Angeles Station.
The Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement Friday that Carrillo has been with the department for 24 years.
“The LAPD Internal Affairs Division initiated an administrative investigation into this allegation and Carrillo was relieved of his police powers pending the resolution of the administrative investigation,” the statement read. “Under the supervision of the Inspector General, the department will ensure this administrative accountability.”
Carrillo is scheduled to be arraigned May 22 at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles on a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge. It was unclear from court records Friday night whether Carrillo had retained an attorney.
