Sterling, chief operating officer of the Georgia secretary of state’s office, is part of an effort that began after the last presidential election to bring together Republican officials willing to defend the state’s election systems and the people who run them. . They want officials to reinforce the message that the election was secure and accurate, which they say is especially important as the country approaches another divisive presidential race.
The group has held meetings in several states and plans to hold more ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

“This has never been and will never be specifically about Trump,” said Matt Germer, director of governance at the R Street Institute and a key organizer of the event. “This is about higher democratic principles — what does it mean to be a conservative who believes in democracy, the rule of law?”
The effort by Republican election officials may not be specifically targeting Trump, but it is in response to the lies the former president has spread and is currently spreading.
The group’s work is a good reminder that not all Republicans are election-denying MAGAs. As the nation saw in 2020, some state-level Republicans are willing to put democracy first rather than get caught up in Trump’s efforts to undermine the foundations of American governance.
These Republican efforts in states like Kentucky, Kansas, Georgia, Utah, and others, combined with Democrats who also support election protection, form a state-level firewall against Trump’s election lies.
Democracy is more important than partisan politics, and if enough of us come together to protect it, we will still have a future where policy differences can be discussed freely as a country.
