After a tragic school shooting in Nashville in March 2023 that killed six people, the Tennessee House of Representatives is considering passing a bill this week that would allow teachers to carry concealed guns.
Private and public school staff can carry bags if they attend a 40-hour training course and receive approval from authorities.
But surprisingly, some teachers and mothers want to block the bill. One particular teacher’s argument against the bill went viral as complete nonsense.

Tennessee’s WSMV 4 reports, “Melissa Alexander brought her son, a Covenant School student, to the Cordell Hull Building on Monday for a news conference about the bill.” My son is sitting here because he was protected by his teacher that day,” she pointed out. She and Mary Joyce not only serve as parents, but also as advocates for educators.
They read a statement from a Covenant School teacher seeking to block the bill.
“I simply cannot imagine how I could pull out a gun with 10 children at my feet and in my arms,” Alexander wrote in the statement.
The words came from a preschool teacher who was watching more than 13 students in a small closet on the day of the shooting.
“We tried to calm the frightened children as we heard gunshots over and over again,” Alexander read.
According to the mothers, they believe teachers should stay with their students during emergencies like this to help them calm down.
“It was because of their teacher that the students stayed quiet and watched the shooter’s feet walk right through the door,” Alexander said.
False argument?
“What if instead of helping the children, she went after the shooter?” she added.
Joyce is concerned that the legislation does not address the issue of whether parents and most staff know whether a teacher is armed before an emergency occurs.
“With no time to prepare, they would watch the teacher run off down the corridor while they had to lock the door, draw the curtains, hide in the corner of the classroom and be quiet and peaceful without any supervision,” Joyce said. calm.
These arguments seem to claim that armed teachers must all “go after” the gunman, which seems like a straw man. Armed teachers will stay put; A gunman entered their classroom. As happened in the Covenant shooting.
No one asked the teachers to gather and go on a search and destroy mission. They simply require teachers to carry firearms in case a shooter shows up at the door.
What “terrible things” would have happened if that teacher had held a pistol while comforting the students?
The scary and honest question is, “What would happen if a gunman entered her classroom and she was unarmed, like what happened in other classrooms?”
Unfortunately, we have too many examples to list to find an answer to this question.
