In NIL satire game, I saw LSU’s Brian Kelly and raised you boise state university spencer Danielson.
This week, both men stepped in to make comments about NIL, but those comments quickly backfired because NIL was too out of touch (Kelly) or too wildly misguided (Danielson).
Let’s start with Kelly, Notre Dame’s all-time winningest coach, who left South Bend for LSU in part because he felt the Tigers were fully committed to winning a national championship.
The school did invest in him with a 10-year, $95 million deal, top-notch facilities, perhaps the best in-state recruiting field in the country, and basically met all the needs.
Shortly after Kelly was hired in Baton Rouge, numerous websites reported stories about the ornate Southern-style mansion as part of an interest-free home and car loan deal he struck at LSU.
So this week, as Kelly went 20-7 in his first two seasons, he was feeling bellyaching for not having enough success recruiting the defensive line.
This is because – get this! – According to Kelly, LSU “isn’t in a position to buy players.”
SEC fans, stop laughing, because we all know what’s been going on in college football in the South and elsewhere since time immemorial. Buying players is nothing new, it’s just legal now. Not only is it legal, it’s encouraged. Not only encouragement, but also expectation.
Kelly can’t have a house, a car and a view of the Baton Rouge sunset and not want to give up some money for a top player — or expect to give up some money in the NIL era. That’s not the case anymore in college football. This is not the Grand Valley State of the 1990s.
LSU has 63 NFL players. Ten are defensive linemen. The last three LSU coaches to win national championships Ed Orgeron, myers and Nick Saban.
That’s the expectation in Baton Rouge – getting NFL talent and winning big. Another expectation is to use every possible avenue to get your team there, and death on the NIL wall means death because college football isn’t going to go back to the way it used to be.
When Danielson said that according to Ron Counts of idaho statesman Boise State freshman ‘banned’ from receiving change during first season. Like this is even enforceable.
Note that Danielson earns over $1 million per year. Note that Danielson also said he personally called coaches to tell them to stop interfering with his players, including star running back Ashton Jeanty and a dozen others on his team.
“The amount of tampering and illegal stuff that’s been directed at Ashton and his family, and him always saying, ‘I’m a member of the Boise State Broncos and I want to continue to be a part of it,’ is through the roof, even “It’s a testament to who he was as a kid. It was probably just one of 12 people that the school contacted at some point about going into the portal because of the money, and they’ve been true to that. Their families are supportive, too.” us.
“They know we’re different here and how we’re going to develop them and how we’re going to love them is different than anywhere else.
“…If someone is just here for the money or something, they’re not the right fit here. It’s no different in recruiting, which is why when I talk to new employees I talk about these things candidly. If you want Stuff that doesn’t directly relate to your development, don’t come here. If all you care about is your jersey number and how much money you make on your first trip, don’t come to Boise State. You’re going to hate me and don’t want to. Stay here.
Kelly and Danielson used all the typical coaching buzzwords. LSU is building something different, they want to build relationships, they want to “develop” players. At Boise State, they love their players as much as anywhere else. Wait, Kelly said LSU loves its players more than anywhere else, so which one is it? Every coach says that.
The irony of two smart college football coaches is palpable. Both make big bucks and teach kids that if they try to make a dime, their development, their loyalty, or their relationship building will be stunted.
Should Boise State tell Danielson he won’t be paid in his first year coaching the team to ensure he develops the right way?
