Chris Gotterup won his first PGA Tour title at the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic on Sunday, finishing 4 under at Dunes Golf and Beach Club. 67 to win by six strokes.
The match was against the Wells Fargo Championship, won by Rory McIlroy, and Gottrup’s win qualified him for next week’s PGA Championship.
Gottrup led by four strokes entering the round, bogeying his first two holes, but he went birdie-eagle-minor over the next three holes at South Carolina’s Dunes Golf and Beach Club. The Birds bounced back brilliantly with their outburst performance.
Four more birdies on the back nine gave the world No. 284 victory at the start of his 27th Tour event, ahead of Alistair Docherty (64) and Davey who were tied for second. Thompson (68)
“I feel good, better than I thought, even though I had two bogeys,” Gottrup said.
“The putt on the first hole was kind of lame and the two-putt on the next hole was really tough. And then to bounce back like I did, that’s the way I roll.
“If I’m going to make bogey, I’m going to twist my head back into line, at least try to do that, and bounce back.”
“No matter what the game is or how my game feels, I’m going to give it my all,” Gottrup said. “I’ve always been like this.”
