As Meta continues its shift toward artificial intelligence and the Metaverse, the company will inevitably retire countless products and features.
Meta has now confirmed it will shut down one of its products: Workplace, a private social networking platform for companies. First up is TechCrunch report Meta also confirmed the news on Tuesday.
“We are discontinuing Workplace in Meta so we can focus on building AI and Metaverse technologies that we believe will fundamentally reshape the way we work,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement. Over the next two years, we will offer Workplace customers the option to transition to Zoom’s Workvivo product, Meta’s only preferred migration partner.”

What is a workplace?
Workplace is a competitor to Slack or Microsoft Teams, so there are other similar options for companies looking to use compatible services. However, Workplace essentially mimics the feel of Facebook, giving the company an interactive platform akin to a private social network that other alternatives can’t offer.
According to Meta, Workplace will continue to operate as is until August 2025. By the end of May 2026, nearly two years later, Workplace will be completely shut down and all content will be deleted.
When Workplace closes, it will mark 10 years of operation for the product. The product launched in 2016 and was originally called Facebook at Work. 2021, Yuan declare Workplace has 7 million paying users. However, TechCrunch reports that Workplace has struggled in recent years because the product no longer fits the company’s direction, which is focused on artificial intelligence and the Metaverse.
Companies that have used Workplace for years may have a lot of data stored on the platform, which they may want to retain. This seems to be the reason why Meta announced its closure two years in advance.
