East Coast and Midwest emerge as prime locations for veterans and active-duty military, according to 2024 Best Cities to Live for Veterans list Veterans United Home Loan.
Tampa emerges as top metro area for veterans. Followed by Rochester, Minnesota; Wichita Falls, Texas; Fargo, North Dakota; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Watertown, New York; Charleston, South Carolina; Medford, Oregon; Pennsylvania Altoona, S.D.; and Sioux Falls, S.D.
“Our in-depth analysis takes into account the feedback and priorities of the hundreds of veterans we surveyed so we can truly gain insight into what those who have served are looking for when putting down roots and building community,” said Chris Birk, vice president of Mortgage Insights. Veterans United said in a statement.
“These cities large and small are great places to raise a family, offer healthy job markets, provide abundant outdoor activities for those starting a new chapter after leaving the military, and provide ample opportunities to connect with veterans.”
Looking at a more granular level, Sioux Falls ranks high among the top 10 most affordable metros, followed closely by Wichita Falls. Conversely, Virginia Beach is the most expensive city in the top 10, with a cost-of-living score slightly above the national average.
When it comes to safety, Rochester ranks No. 1. Only two cities in the top 10 — Sioux Falls and Charleston — had crime rates slightly above the national average.
A total of 25 factors were considered in the analysis, including median home price, quality of life and the strength of the veterans community.
According to data U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Texas led the nation with 10,237 VA loans issued in the second quarter of 2024.
