A two-year-old child is being treated in Bangkok after a Singapore Airlines flight from London encountered severe turbulence, hospital authorities said.
The director of Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital gave an update on the condition of the injured, saying that 40 people were still in the hospital, half of them in intensive care, and most of them had spinal injuries.
Adinun Kittiratanapaibool said one person has been discharged from hospital.
Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence on Tuesday, killing 73-year-old British man Geoff Kitchen and injuring dozens of others.
Mr Kitchen is believed to have died of a heart attack.
Of the 41 people currently hospitalized and one person who has been discharged, 22 suffered spine and spinal cord injuries, six suffered skull and brain injuries, and 13 suffered muscle and soft tissue injuries.
Dr. Kittiratanapaibool said the hospital had performed surgeries on 17 people, nine of whom were related to spinal injuries.
He said the two-year-old was being treated for a concussion.
Among those receiving treatment in hospital are 10 Britons, nine Australians, seven Malaysians and four Filipinos.
Dr. Kittiratanapaibool said the oldest patient was 83 years old.
The Boeing 777-300 airliner, with 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board, encountered severe turbulence over the Indian Ocean on Tuesday.
Passengers on the plane told the BBC they felt the plane suddenly drop and saw others who were not wearing seat belts “immediately fall into the ceiling”.
The flight was forced to make an emergency landing in the Thai capital.
A rescue plane carrying the remaining passengers and crew arrived in Singapore early Wednesday.
Singapore Airlines chief executive Goh Choon Phong apologized, offering his “deepest apologies” to everyone affected by the “sudden extreme turbulence”.
“We are deeply sorry for the traumatic experience everyone aboard SQ321 has experienced,” he added.
When the incident occurred, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong had been in office for a week, and he promised to conduct a “thorough investigation” into the incident.
He said: “I once again express my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. I also hope and pray that those injured can complete and return home soon.”
