Trump’s attorney, Todd Branch, said the former president was involved in all decisions about his defense and wanted to be a litigator.

Jesse Waters asked Trump on Fox News how he was involved in his own defense.
Blanche replied:
what do you think? Very involved. He’s a smart guy and he knows what he’s doing. He jokingly told us a lot that he wanted to be a litigator. You want to be the one actually arguing because he’s a smart guy and he knows what he’s doing. We made every decision together. Something frustrated him. A few months ago, the judge asked us to be able to argue reliance on counsel, to the extent that he relied on his counsel, and the judge did not allow us to do that. Thank you so much for really pushing us to think about why we can’t do this or that. I have been honored to spend the past six weeks with him and advocate for him. We got a bad result today. It’s not over yet, but it’s already great.

The Washington Post’s Aaron Black noted:
Very interesting review that will cause people to read between the lines a lot.
Just yesterday, Andrew McCarthy wrote that Trump’s defense was suffering because “Trump insists on his lawyers subordinating his defense to his desired political narrative at trial.”
Although he is very complementary to Trump, it is inevitable that he also creates some distance between Trump’s defense. Reports from reporters in the courtroom indicate that Trump was actively involved in directing his defense.
If Trump was defending him, that explains why it would take a jury about nine hours of deliberation to convict him of 34 felonies.
Trump has always claimed that he is smarter than lawyers, and he has proven this by committing 34 felonies.
