MINNEAPOLIS — A Minneapolis police officer was killed Thursday while providing medical attention to a man who shot him after responding to a call of shots fired in what authorities said was an ambush.
The shooting suspect and another person were also killed in a shooting in a south Minneapolis neighborhood that left a third person seriously injured, Minneapolis Assistant Police Chief Katie Blackwell said.
Another police officer and a firefighter were also injured, authorities said.
The fallen officer was identified as Jamal Mitchell, an engaged father. Police lined up outside Hennepin County Medical Center, where Mitchell was pronounced dead.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said: “Minneapolis has lost a hero – Officer Jamal Mitchell. This officer did what he did to protect and save the lives of others. The ultimate sacrifice. His life, his service and his name will always be remembered.
Authorities said Mitchell was praised for his heroic actions on his third day on the job last year. The Minneapolis Police Department posted on Facebook last year that Mitchell and another officer rescued an elderly couple from a house fire. Police ran inside and rescued the couple before the home was completely engulfed in flames and destroyed, the post said.
“Their quick actions…were truly heroic as they prevented this fire from becoming even more tragic,” Chief Brian O’Hara said in the post.
Three months ago, two police officers and a firefighter paramedic were killed while responding to a domestic violence call in the Minneapolis suburb of Burnsville. In this incident, a man opened fire from the home while seven children were inside. A third officer was injured and the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
