On December 15, 2023, in Washington, the United States, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani left the U.S. District Court after being ordered to pay $148 million in a defamation case.

The Washington, D.C., Board of Bar Professional Responsibility recommended Friday that Rudy Giuliani be barred from practicing law in the nation’s capital.
In its report, the committee cited Giuliani’s work in Pennsylvania after the 2020 presidential election in which he sought to sway the state’s outcome in favor of his former client, Donald Trump.
“The Board agrees with the hearing committee that disciplinary counsel established by clear and convincing evidence that defendant violated the Pennsylvania Rules of Professional Conduct,” the report said. “With respect to sanctions, we agree with the hearing committee that defendant’s counsel should be dismissed qualifications.”
The report follows one last year in which the Washington Bar Association’s disciplinary committee also recommended that Giuliani be disbarred. The case will now go to the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, which will decide whether to disbar Giuliani, a former New York mayor.
In a statement provided to NBC News, Giuliani spokesman Ted Goodman blamed the report’s findings on “partisan Democrats” and said the decision would prevent lawyers from taking on Trump Pu as a customer.
“This recommendation is not surprising as partisan Democrats continue to undermine the credibility of the American judicial system in an effort to defeat President Trump and retain power,” Goodman said.
“Revoking the mayor’s law license is intended to prevent attorneys from representing President Donald Trump or any other client willing to challenge the current political establishment,” he added.
Goodman also called on “rank-and-file members of the Washington Bar Association to speak out against this irresponsible and anti-American proposal — regardless of whether you agree with the mayor’s political views.”
Giuliani has had his law license revoked in New York, where a court ruled he made “manifestly false and misleading statements” following the 2020 presidential election.
Another former Trump attorney, Jenna Ellis, was banned from practicing law in Colorado for three years after working for Trump after the last election.
