It sounds like Apple’s plans for WWDC are about more than just sprinkling AI fairy dust on everything (although that will be a big part of that, too). In addition to Siri getting new AI-powered app controls, the company also plans to overhaul the iOS and macOS Settings app, Control Center, Messages, Mail, and more.
Mark Gurman writes in his article that the new, “cleaner” Settings app UI will mean better organization and improved search Open Newsletter Burundi today. He added that similar improvements will be coming to the macOS System Settings app.
Apple will also update Control Center (the drop-down menu for quick settings in iOS) to provide new music widgets and “improvements to the way it operates smart home appliances.” Gurman didn’t specify what changes would happen, but as convenient as the home page widget is now, I can certainly see room for improvement — for example, being able to customize the devices that show up there would be handy.
Gurman wrote that Messages will get a new feature that will let you animate individual words in text messages. mike rumor Coverage begins Friday. He added that Apple will also add new Tapback icons—reactive emoji-style icons that appear when you long-press a message. Apple will also reportedly make user interface changes to Photos and update the Mail app with “several improvements.”
Apple will also apparently release visionOS 2.0, which will include native versions of first-party apps. Currently, visionOS only offers iPad versions of Apple apps such as Home, Calendar, Podcasts, and Pages.
However, Gurman reiterated that Apple’s biggest focus at WWDC 2024 will be artificial intelligence. One of the big rumored features is that, without any setup from the user or developer, Siri will be able to perform tasks within the app itself based on your device’s analysis of your activity – sort of like Rabbit’s promised “big action model” , but with some shadow clipping. Some examples he reported include Siri providing meeting summaries, cropping photos for you, or moving notes in the Notes app from one folder to another.
According to Gurman, some artificial intelligence features will reportedly be available when iOS 18 launches this fall. Past-rumored iOS AI features including Voice Memos and Notes apps will get real-time voice transcription. There’s also the possibility of a custom emoji feature created by artificial intelligence coming soon. WWDC 2024 is scheduled to take place on June 10, so we won’t have to wait too long to find out what Apple has to offer this year in terms of updates to AI, iOS, and macOS.
