Dr. Richard James Burgess will resign in early 2026 after ten years as President and CEO of the Association for Independent Music (A2IM).
The organization said Burgess “played an important role in promoting the interests of independent music” and left an “indelible mark” on the organization and the wider music industry.
He made the announcement at the organization’s annual general meeting during A2IM’s Independence Week.
A2IM said Burgess had “brought a period of significant growth and innovation” to the organization during his tenure, “cementing its reputation as a strong advocate for independent music”.
The board said it has begun a search for his successor.
According to A2IM, under Dr. Burgess’ leadership, the organization’s membership has grown to more than 750 member companies.
A2IM also highlighted Burgess’ advocacy and policy work during his tenure, noting that he “ensures that independent voices are represented in all conversations on Capitol Hill that may impact independents by hiring a Washington-based lobbying firm and working with other industry associations.” Develops policy and advocacy initiatives in the interests of A2IM members and is personally involved in numerous other initiatives.”
During Burgess’s tenure, A2IM said the organization “prioritized diversity and inclusion within the industry, launching initiatives to support underrepresented communities, and promoting gender balance through gender balance in staff, boards, and events (front and back-of-house). Diversity sets an example.”
During his tenure, A2IM also launched a healthcare program for its member companies, their employees, contractors and artists, and expanded A2IM Independent Week “from a single-room event into a premier international conference for the independent music industry.”
A2IM says it was founded in 2005 “in response to digital disruption in the music industry, seeking economic equality and market parity, and as an advocacy platform to address the concerns, challenges and challenges represented by a consolidated but extremely diverse independent industry.” Advantage”.
