ABC News reports that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris have agreed to hold a debate on September 10.
The network’s announcement Thursday came shortly after Trump said at a press conference that he had agreed to hold three debates with Harris on separate networks in September.
Trump rejoined the ABC debate days after posting on his social media network that he would not appear on the network and citing the lawsuit he had filed. His decision created a much-anticipated moment in the election, with the first debate leading to a sea change in the race as Democratic President Joe Biden ended his re-election bid and endorsed Harris.
“I think it’s very important to have a debate,” Trump said Thursday. “I look forward to the debate because I think we have to set the record straight.”
Late Thursday, Harris wrote on the social media site
At a private fundraiser in Paris on Thursday, Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff said he “can’t wait” to see his wife debate Trump. He attended the closing ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Paris as head of the U.S. delegation.
Fox News has also proposed a debate between Harris and Trump on September 4, while NBC News plans to air a debate on September 25. It’s great to have this conversation” Extra Debate.
Trump also said he wanted vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance to debate Harris’ choice for vice president, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, on CBS. The network is discussing possible dates for proposing the meeting.
ABC said David Muir and Linsey Davis will host the Sept. 10 game. On the same day, Trump and Biden agreed to have a second and final debate, but Biden’s decision cast that debate into doubt.
With polls showing a close race between the former president and current vice president, any debate will be extra important. While Harris has stirred a wave of excitement among Democrats since inheriting Biden’s mantle, she has yet to attend a news conference or speak to reporters.
Republicans have made this an issue. During Trump’s press conference on Thursday, Vance posted on X that Harris was hiding behind a teleprompter. “Eighteen days have passed since she answered real questions from the media,” he wrote.
