Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese made WNBA history with his seventh consecutive double-double, the longest streak by a rookie in the league.
The former LSU star set the record on Thursday in an 83-72 home win over the Dallas Wings. Reese had 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds.
In basketball, a double-double refers to a player scoring in double digits in at least two of the five major statistical categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.
“I’m glad we finally won at home,” Reese said after the game on ESPN. “It’s obviously super exciting for myself. I try to give myself some grace and tell myself I’m doing a good job. But I still have a lot to grow and I’m excited to be in this league, excited Can win some championships more.
Reese broke the record of six consecutive double-doubles set by Tina Charles in 2010 and Cindy Brown in 1998, CBS Sports reported. Charles still holds the rookie season record of 22 double-doubles.
Reese still has a chance to match that mark this year, recording eight double-doubles with 26 games remaining. She currently averages 12.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.
When asked about her accomplishments in her postgame press conference, Reese gave a shoutout to other strong prospects who came before her, including LSU alum Sylvia Falls. Foles holds the WNBA record for most career double-doubles (193) and dubbed Reese the “Miss Double-Double Queen” when Reese was in college.
“I love Sylvia. She was a great person to me and a great mentor when I was at LSU,” Reese said. “I know she would be very proud of me.”
Her historic success came before Chicago’s rematch against the Indiana Fever, led by another star rookie, Caitlin Clark.
