Anti-Islam activist Michael Stutzenberg was injured in a knife attack in the German city of Mannheim on Friday.
The Associated Press reported that police said the attacker injured several people and was subsequently shot by arriving police.
The attack was recorded on camera by the Buergerbewegung Pax Europa group. One of the injured was Michael Stürzenberger, described by Euronews as a German far-right activist and anti-Islam critic who was also a member of the group.
According to Euronews, the Alliance for Peace in Europe has been vocal in its opposition to Islam and Muslims in Germany, including pushing for a ban on mosques.

Buergerbewegung Pax Europa later said in a statement that Stürzenberger had “severe stab wounds to the face and legs” and had been taken to a local hospital for treatment.
“A police officer who tried to stop the attacker was stabbed in the back and neck by the assassin and had to be taken to hospital. [a] Hospital,” it added, noting that the attacker “apparently survived” after being shot by police.
A banner was hung at the scene that read “Stop political Islam!”
Police said in a statement that people were no longer in any danger. Officials did not disclose the motive. One of the people injured in the stabbing was a police officer.

Interior Minister Nancy Feather said an investigation would be needed to determine a motive. “If the investigation reveals an Islamist motive, it would reaffirm our warnings about the enormous danger of Islamist violence,” she said in a statement, according to the Associated Press.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz posted on X that “the pictures from Mannheim are terrible” and that “violence is absolutely unacceptable in our democracy.”

The stabbing took place on the market square in central Mannheim. This city of approximately 300,000 people is located south of Frankfurt.
