If you’re disappointed that the only AI model integrated with Apple devices so far will be ChatGPT, it sounds like you won’t have to wait long for that to change. Apple will reportedly announce “at least” one more deal this fall – one that also includes Google Gemini Bloomberg’Mark Gurman in his Open Today’s newsletter.
In addition to chatbot integration, there’s Apple Intelligence, which is only expected to appear in beta this fall. Apple reportedly wants to make artificial intelligence a direct source of profit, rather than just a set of features intended for mobile hardware products. As part of that, Gurman said the company “may eventually” launch a subscription-only Apple Intelligence feature.
But this doesn’t seem to be happening for the time being. Although Apple Intelligence is currently only available for iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, who knows whether its first version will be enough to promote a substantial iPhone upgrade cycle. After all, we don’t even know if these features are good. At the same time, he noted that Apple will still receive at least some AI funding when it takes a cut of in-app purchases from its AI partners’ chatbot subscriptions.
Third-party AI services could be a good stopgap solution for Cupertino companies while they slowly roll out their own generative AI systems. For the rest of us, it will mean more choice, and even if there is choice, in many ways it will just mean variations on the algorithmic reconstruction theme of compressed material (or at least the potential for interestingly erroneous cooking advice).
