Apple eventually paid a $50 million settlement over its defective MacBook butterfly keyboards.
Keyboard owners whose claims are approved will receive checks for up to $395, depending on the extent of the repairs needed. 9 to 5Michael Burkhardt reports that he has received two payment checks.
Purchased a MacBook between 2015 and 2019? You may soon receive a settlement payment of up to $395
As soon as the keyboard was launched in 2015, some customers reported that the keyboard often got stuck or completely broke and became unresponsive. Additionally, users complain that small pieces of dust or debris get stuck in the key and they are unable to remove it, rendering the key unusable. In 2019, Apple switched from butterfly keyboard design to “scissor switch” design.

In order to solve this problem, Apple launched a repair plan, but just replacing the butterfly keyboard with other butterfly keyboards did not solve the problem.
The class-action lawsuit, filed in 2018, claims Apple knew the keyboard design was defective and hid the condition from customers. Apple agreed to settle the class action lawsuit in 2022, but as part of the settlement, Apple denied the lawsuit’s claims.
According to the settlement website, users who replace the top cover of an affected MacBook two or more times within four years of purchase will receive between $300 and $395. Owners can get up to $125 if they replace just one piece. If only the keycaps need to be replaced, the owner can receive up to $50 in compensation. Only Apple customers who need repairs in California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and Washington are eligible for compensation.
