Apple Intelligence, Apple’s name for a set of artificial intelligence features on its devices, may not always be completely free.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said in the latest issue of the Power On newsletter that Apple is considering making money from Apple Intelligence.
Apple’s upcoming AirPods may feature built-in cameras
Apple Intelligence, or AI for short, was announced in June 2024 during the company’s annual WWDC event. It will be released as a set of free features on Apple products such as iPhone, iPad and Mac, with some of the announced features available as betas when iOS 18 is released in September. New options include artificial intelligence-generated images called Genmoji, a smarter Siri, and a feature called Rewrite that suggests edits to your writing.
Mix and match speed of light
Gurman, however, said Apple needs new revenue streams, especially as it becomes increasingly difficult to innovate on hardware devices like the iPhone. One of these could be a paid tier for artificial intelligence, possibly called “Apple Intelligence+,” which would provide subscribers with additional features. Apple also gets a cut of the subscription revenue generated by its AI partners.
It likely won’t happen overnight; Gurman didn’t have an exact timeline, but he did say implementation will “take time” and that Apple could be making money from artificial intelligence “within a few years.”
