The Biden administration on Wednesday announced new measures aimed at accelerating the development of new nuclear power projects in the United States, seeking to help mitigate risks associated with building nuclear power plants that could cost tens of billions of dollars.
final business scale Southern Company’s Vogtle nuclear reactor project is more than $16B over budget and seven years behind schedule.
The White House has established a new task force that includes federal agencies as well as members of nuclear developers, contractors, labor and nonprofit groups that will seek to find ways to mitigate cost and schedule overruns in the construction of nuclear power plants.
It also said the Army would seek feedback on plans to deploy advanced nuclear reactors to provide power to multiple installations across the United States.
The Biden administration has said nuclear energy is needed to meet U.S. climate and clean energy goals, but more than a dozen reactors have closed since 2013, losing out to cheap electricity from natural gas and renewables.
