Johnson County, Kansas, Sheriff Calvin Hayden admitted that the warrant he claimed would have allowed him to seize election ballots was not signed by a judge. Since 2019, Hayden has claimed to be investigating election fraud, focusing on a software company used by the county to manage poll workers. No charges have been laid as a result of the investigation. While state law requires the county to destroy ballots, the elections office delayed doing so because of Hayden’s alleged investigation. But when they never received a search warrant and after the secretary of state’s office reminded them to comply with the law, they destroyed the ballots, leading Hayden to charge them with destroying evidence. At a candidate forum, former Kansas Republican Party Chairman Mike Kukerman asked Hayden which judge signed the arrest warrant he claimed to have. “There is no judge,” Hayden replied. Cookman noted that a judge must sign off on a warrant for it to be valid. “I’m not saying it’s effective,” Hayden said.
