British Olympic diver Tom Daley, who won five medals and became famous for his edge weaving at the Paris Olympics, is retiring.
“At the end, on the platform, I was very emotional because I knew this would be my last competitive dive,” he told Vogue in an interview published Monday. “But I had to make a decision at some point, and it felt like now was the right time. Now was the best time to get to this point.
Daley, now 30, made his Olympic career debut at the 2008 Beijing Olympics when he was 14 years old. He has since won three bronze medals, a gold medal and, most recently, a silver medal in the men’s 10m synchronized platform event at the Paris Olympics.
He took a two-year hiatus from the sport after the Tokyo Olympics and overcame several obstacles in his career, including a broken hand, a torn tricep, hitting his head on the platform and suffering “a twist,” he told UK Edition “Vogue”.
He used his expertise as a commentator during the Paris Olympics, plans to start his own line of lingerie and swimwear, and enriched his skills in knitting and crochet by enrolling in sewing courses at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles .
“Thank you for diving again and again,” he said on Instagram.
