A car plowed into the terrace of a Paris cafe on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring several others.
Borough President Eric Pliez said all of the injured were customers of the cafe.
The driver initially fled the scene in the French capital’s 20th arrondissement but was later arrested, police added.
The possible motive was unclear, but police sources told AFP it could have been a traffic accident.
France is on high security alert nine days before the Olympics kick off in Paris.
Earlier, police cordoned off the area near the scene of the crash, which French media said was the Le Ramus restaurant on the corner of Avenue Père Lachaise and rue Ramus.
The incident occurred at 19:30 local time (17:30 GMT).
One of the passengers in the vehicle reportedly tested positive for alcohol. Local reports did not mention the driver’s condition.
Police and emergency services remained at the scene on Wednesday night.
