The far-right Supreme Court continues its unprecedented attack on public safety by overturning common-sense guidance issued by the ATF in 2018. Crash stocks have played a devastating role in many of our nation’s horrific mass shootings, but sadly, it’s no surprise that the Supreme Court has struck down this necessary public safety rule while pursuing an extreme agenda that’s out of touch with reality. They are even further to the right than Donald Trump.
As I warned the Trump administration at the time, the only way to permanently close this loophole is through legislation. Senate Democrats are ready to pass legislation banning bump stocks, but we need the votes of Senate Republicans.
The far-right and extreme Supreme Court majority seems hell-bent on negating any governmental authority in the public interest. Without the filibuster rule, Senate Democrats could pass a bill to legislate bump stocks, but since we’re in an election year, Senate Republicans will line up to support a tool that has no purpose other than making guns more deadly. .
Democrats are ready to take action to save lives, and it would be telling if Republicans refused to join them.
