Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas finally disclosed additional 2019 payments by real estate billionaire and Republican megadonor Harlan Crow, according to a revised financial disclosure report from Thomas in May. Two travel expenses.
ProPublica first reported on the trips to Bali, Indonesia, and a secret all-male club called Bohemian Grove in Northern California. Judge Thomas has not previously acknowledged the trips, in which Crowe and his wife paid for room and board at a luxury resort, in any of his financial disclosures, the report said.
Thomas was criticized in 2023 for failing to report on the first round of Crow-funded luxury vacations. Thomas said the trips to California and Bali were “inadvertently omitted from the filing” and that he “sought and received guidance from an accountant and ethics consultant” in preparing the 2023 report.
In November, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to authorize a subpoena against the Texas developer.
The report found that Crowe’s financial relationship with Thomas extended well beyond the holidays, with Crowe reportedly paying for Thomas’s grandnephew’s private school fees Puplica. The publication also discovered that a Crow-related company purchased land in Savannah, Georgia, owned by Thomas and his family, but Thomas did not initially report it.
Thomas’s extensive financial ties to Crowe prompted the court in November to adopt a formal ethics rule, although it did not include enforcement capabilities.
The court’s new ethics rule has done little to quell the controversy surrounding it, though, with Justice Samuel Alito recently displaying evidence at one of his two properties related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The court was scrutinized after the flag. Alito blamed the flags on his wife, Martha-Ann Alito, and claimed that neither of them knew what the flags meant.
