A family outing took a terrifying turn Saturday when a boat captain was struck by lightning, leaving the family stranded off the coast of Florida and in need of rescue, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Seven people were rescued after the 24-foot boat lost power due to a lightning strike.
The U.S. Coast Guard posted on social media that the incident occurred about two miles east of Cape Canaveral.
The family and captain were placed aboard a rescue vessel at U.S. Coast Guard Station Port Canaveral and taken to a safe harbor, where the captain received medical care.

The extent of the captain’s injuries was unclear.
The vessel has broken down and its owner is working with a commercial salvage agency on a salvage operation, according to the Cape Canaveral Coast Guard.

The U.S. Coast Guard Station Port Canavere said the incident reminded people to pay attention to weather conditions before heading out to sea.
