An international express train collided with a bus on a level crossing in southern Slovakia, killing at least five people, emergency workers said.
According to a Facebook emergency services post, the accident occurred near the town of Nove Zamky, about 80 kilometers east of the capital Bratislava.
According to news agencies, the incident occurred at around 17:00 local time (18:00 BST) and injured at least five people.
Media reports said the bus was cut in half by the impact, and photos showed the locomotive on fire as passengers walked along the tracks to safety.
“I am worried that the number of people killed in this accident may increase,” rescue service spokesperson Petra Klimesova told AFP.
Railway spokesperson Vladimira Bahylova told the news agency that the train driver “suffered burns due to a fire on the locomotive.”
Local media released video footage showing passengers carrying luggage next to the train, part of it catching fire and sending smoke rising into the sky.
According to unconfirmed Slovak media reports, the level crossing has lights and barriers, but they are not functioning due to recent storms.
Slovak Railways has not yet commented on the claims.
The EuroCity 279 train from Prague to Budapest collided with a bus operated by Arriva.
Emergency services said five ambulances and three air ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
