From General Order No. 24-0021 issued today by the federal court for the Northern District of Illinois:
The Court recognized that the global IT disruption that occurred on 19 July 2024 caused significant difficulties for litigants trying to meet court deadlines. Accordingly, it is hereby ordered that the date for the filing of any order, writ, proceeding, pleading or other matter expiring or heretofore returnable on July 19, 2024, is hereby extended and continued to Monday, July 22, 2024.
I feel reasonable. I would expect that even in the absence of such an order the courts would condone delay in such circumstances, but it is always beneficial for the courts to acknowledge this up front. (I don’t know if this helps influence the statutory deadline for court jurisdiction; if readers know the answer, please note it in the comments.)
Rumors that a federal court would extend the court deadline to January 1, 1900, over concerns about Y2K, were actually unfounded.
