The global Windows outage, caused by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, has reportedly affected businesses including airlines, medical services, banks, media broadcasters, schools and supermarkets.
According to a report by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), citing aviation analysis company Cirium, the accident not only caused a blue screen of death for Windows users around the world, but also caused the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights. Reports are pouring in of delays at airports from Bangkok to Los Angeles, London to Berlin, Barcelona and elsewhere.

European budget airline Ryanair also issued an update to passengers on Friday morning, informing them of the service disruption and advising travelers checking in that they could still obtain their boarding passes.

Air traffic tracking company Flightradar is currently publishing flight information on X.

Meanwhile, other major services around the world have also been affected by power outages. The UK’s National Health Service has also been affected, with a “regional incident” declared, with affected services including the NHS app and GPs. Emergency services continue to be available.
UK train services, including Southern Rail, have also been affected by the suspension.

The issue is reportedly related to CrowdStrike’s Falcon Sensor, software designed to prevent cyberattacks.
“CrowdStrike is aware of reports of Windows host crashes related to Falcon sensors,” the cybersecurity company wrote in an alert confirming the outage at 1:30 a.m. ET on Friday. Just that morning ET Just before 6pm, the company released another statement, per the BBC:
“Crowdstrike is actively working with customers affected by the flaw discovered in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not affected. This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated, and fixed. We recommend Customers visit the Support Portal for the latest updates, and complete and ongoing updates will continue to be provided on our website.
“We are aware of an issue affecting Windows devices due to an update to a third-party software platform. We expect a resolution will be available soon,” a Microsoft spokesperson told the BBC on Friday.
