Some CVS Health pharmacy locations are sold out of at-home COVID-19 tests (NYSE:CVS) Demand has been fueled by a summer surge in cases, according to Bloomberg, citing data as of Friday afternoon.
CVS (CVS) is located in Houston, Austin and Pharmacies including the city of Reno, Nevada, are reporting that all brands of home COVID-19 test kits are out of stock. However, the company said that 91% of its store network has at least one brand available for testing.
Becton, Dickinson (BDX), QuidelOrtho (QDEL), Abbott Laboratories (ABT) and Roche (OTCQX:RHHBY) (OTCQX:RHHBF) are among the largest U.S. manufacturers of at-home COVID-19 tests
The rise in demand coincides with an increase in COVID-19 infections. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the week ending July 27, 16% of coronavirus tests came back positive, compared with 14% a week ago.
Meanwhile, CVS (CVS) rival WBA said it has adequate supplies of COVID-19 tests, and its website indicates there are no shortages in its pharmacy network.
However, Walgreens (WBA) and several independent pharmacies in New York City say demand has risen sharply in recent months.
Walgreens (WBA) spokesperson Molly Sheehan also confirmed that purchases of home COVID-19 testing kits are close to their highest levels since the holiday season. Still, second-quarter 2024 results reported last month by Abbott Laboratories (ABT), the maker of the Binax Covid test, showed COVID-19 test sales were down about 61% annually.
