One person was killed and four injured after the roof of Delhi Airport collapsed after heavy rains.
Online videos showed huge pillars supporting the roof crashing into parked cars at the airport’s Terminal 1.
All flights from the terminal have been suspended and check-in counters have been closed.
Authorities said the incident occurred at 05:00 (23:30 GMT on Thursday).
Rescue operations are underway at the airport and the injured are receiving treatment in hospital.
India’s aviation regulator has advised airlines to arrange alternative flights for passengers or provide refunds.
Federal Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu announced a compensation of 2 million rupees ($24,000; £19,000) to the family of the deceased and 300,000 rupees to the injured.
He also told reporters that the situation was under control and inspections were underway to prevent further incidents. Airports across the country that have added buildings will also be inspected, he added.
The incident was criticized on social media, with many users pointing out that the terminal underwent extensive renovations costing billions of rupees and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March. The latest general election is a month away.
However, Mr Kinjarap later said the collapsed section was not part of the renovation.
“I would like to clarify that the building inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi is on the other side and the building that collapsed here is an old building that was opened in 2009,” he said.
Heavy rains have lashed Delhi since Thursday, providing much-needed respite from the sweltering heat in the Indian capital since April.
However, this resulted in waterlogging and severe traffic congestion in the city.
Videos shared on social media showed people wading through knee-deep water and cars and buses partially submerged in the subway.
Heavy downpours also caused flight delays and cancellations.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted that “heavy to very heavy rainfall” will continue in the city over the weekend.
