Virginia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner is trying to assemble a group of Democratic senators to persuade Biden to resign, according to anonymous sources.
The Washington Post reports:
Sen. Mark R. Warner, D-Va., is trying to rally a group of Democratic senators to ask President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, according to two people with direct knowledge of the situation.
Warner told Democratic senators that Biden could no longer remain in the election after his poor debate performance, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. Warner told others he was deeply concerned about Biden’s inability to run a campaign that could defeat former President Donald Trump.
Where did the leak of this story come from? Apparently, this comes from either the Democratic senator’s office that Warner contacted or Warner’s office. For their part, Warners has not confirmed or denied the report, which means it is true.
Democrats in Congress, worried about keeping their jobs, are fueling the panic and efforts to remove Biden from the race. If these senators want Biden to step down, then they need to stand up, look America in the eyes, and say so. This game of hiding behind anonymous sources is cowardly.
The only realistic alternative to President Biden is Vice President Harris. Any other plan would cost Democrats weeks of campaign time and give Donald Trump an advantage heading into November. The whole situation is deeply undemocratic because party elites watched the Biden debates and decided they were going to throw out the will of Democratic primary voters.
If so, then these Democrats who want Biden to step down owe Democratic voters a public explanation and respect for the primary process.
