Democrats eye J6 chair trying to eliminate Trump secret service protection to investigate assassination attempt
House Democrats are pushing for the former Jan. 6 committee chair who tried to strip former President Donald Trump of his security detail earlier this year to join a bipartisan commission investigating the latest assassination attempt.
On Tuesday, Punchbowl News reported that former Jan. 6 Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Mississippi, is one of the top candidates Democrats are considering for appointment to the 11-member panel created by House leadership .
“House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries could choose five Democrats to serve alongside six Republicans,” Punchbowl reported. “Democrats are still sifting through potential candidates. But one name we’ve heard is Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi). Thompson is the top Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee and serves as chairman of the January 6 committee.
The Mississippi congressman wrote in a post on X that he was “glad the former president is safe” after a would-be assassin’s bullet passed through Trump’s ear at a rally in Pennsylvania. Trump miraculously avoided assassination by tilting his head to read an immigration chart at the last second.
Democrats also want Rep. Dan Goldman, another Trump hater, to get involved.

Trump impeachment, Democrats push back on Republican concerns about possible role in assassination attempt investigation
The office of a House Democrat who played a key role in former President Trump’s first impeachment is now pushing back against Republican criticism that he should not be part of the task force investigating the former president’s assassination attempt.
Rep. Dan Goldman of New York, who was criticized last year for saying Trump “has to be eliminated,” is one of the Democrats being considered for a seat on the bipartisan committee studying the Trump’s Butler shooting on July 13.
“As a lifelong devotee to democracy and the rule of law, Congressman Goldman immediately clarified the false statement made last November and emphasized his strong condemnation of all political violence.” Goldman Sachs spokesperson Madison Andrews told Fox Digital News that the The lawmaker made clear through pointed questioning at a congressional hearing last week that the Secret Service must be held accountable for its unacceptable security failures and that he is determined to ensure such failures never happen again.
Republicans must resist these options in the strongest terms possible.
Simply say no.
