The Arizona Diamondbacks lost two key players on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies in Phoenix.
Starting pitcher Zach Gallen left the game in the fifth inning with an apparent groin injury, leaving one inning after All-Star second baseman Keitel Marte left the game with an apparent left leg injury.
Gallen appeared to make some adjustments after escaping a Bryce Harper run to score, cutting Arizona’s lead to 2-1.
Diamondbacks coach and head coach Tori Lovullo came out to check on Gallen, who promptly exited without a warmup. Gallen left after allowing one run on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out three.
The right-hander enters Arizona’s lineup Saturday with a 9-5 record and a 3.75 ERA, and the team is 15-5 since the All-Star break.
Marte was injured on Garrett Stubbs’ double in the top of the fourth quarter. Stubbs slid headfirst into the bag and rolled over Marte’s left calf, and Marte was tagged late.
Marte lay on the bench for a few seconds while Lovullo tended to him. As Arizona fans chanted MVP, Marte stood up and cautiously retreated to the dugout, visibly in pain.
Kevin Newman replaced Marte, who hit his 30th homer of the season in the first inning and walked in the second. Marte also hit 81 runs this year and batted .299.
