EcoFlow’s new Power Hat has to be the silliest headgear I’ve ever heard – I think I like it? It’s a wide-brimmed, floppy sunhat filled with solar cells that you can use to charge your phone. EcoFlow says it can fully charge a 4,000mAh smartphone in “as quickly as 3-4 hours.” Sounds perfect for casually scrolling around a campsite, or surviving in the sunny Mad Maxian desert wasteland.
According to EcoFlow’s specifications, the $129 Power Hat solar cells are made from a thin, flexible material called Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact (PERC) monocrystalline silicon. It delivers approximately 12 watts of charging power via USB-A and USB-C connectors on the underside of the hood. The whole thing weighs 370 grams.
Oh, and the Power Hat is IP65 rated, which means it’s dustproof and can withstand water jets from any direction (although I doubt that’s true if you point the Super Soaker at a USB port). Here’s a promotional video, complete with an innocuous, slightly Kings of Leon-sounding soundtrack that’s perfect bonnet music if my past festival experiences are any indication:
This hat is available in two size ranges. The smaller size adjusts from 56–58 cm (22–22.8 in), while the larger size adjusts from 59–61 cm (23.2–24 in). The pre-order deadline for the Power Hat is August 31, and EcoFlow says it expects to start shipping in mid-September.
