Republican Congressman Corey Mills said on Monday he would launch a “parallel independent investigation” into the attempt to assassinate President Trump after Speaker Johnson assembled a disappointing task force to investigate the shooting of Butler.
The Florida congressman and former sniper said he was disappointed with Johnson’s Trump assassination attempt task force.
Notably missing from the task force are two veterans who happen to be snipers: Eli Crane and Corey Mills.
“This is extremely unfortunate, but not surprising to anyone familiar with how DC works. I am not a politician, a leader, or a ‘yes man,'” Mills said in a statement on Monday.
“I wish the members of Speaker Johnson’s task force well and believe now is the time to conduct a parallel independent investigation with subject matter experts (SMEs) and whistleblowers who have come forward, myself and Rep. Eli Crane ) and Benny Johnson have spoken to them,” Mills said. “I will be speaking with other members, and while I do not have subpoena power, I will personally fund additional staff as needed to further investigate and uncover the truth.”
For those familiar with how DC works, this is very unfortunate, but not surprising. I’m not a politician, a leader, or a “yes man.”

Cory Mills believes the July 13 assassination attempt on Trump may have been orchestrated.
This may be why Speaker Johnson did not select Mills to serve on the task force. He believes the Secret Service was involved in the attack.
Few believed that 20-year-old Thomas Crooks acted alone.
According to officials, Crooks did the following on his own without internal help:
- A drone flew over the Pennsylvania State Fair and captured aerial footage of the rally layout on the day of the event, including footage 2 hours before Trump took the stage.
- Went through security and got a rangefinder.
- Evade law enforcement officers from several different state, local and federal agencies.
- Somehow, the bear “climbed” to a rooftop 450 feet away from Trump with a rifle, climbing to the perfect vantage point as bystanders called police, but was still able to shoot Trump eight times.
- A vehicle packed with explosives was parked near a Trump rally
- After a sniper took a photo of Crooks looking suspicious, he was able to move around the grounds.
- The sniper in the second-story window was only 40 feet away from Crooks and did not pin him down.
- Trump was still able to take office after Crooks was deemed suspicious by the Secret Service.
