Former 1/6 Committee Chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) told Trump to return to Mar-a-Lago to await his felony conviction.
Rep. Thompson said in a statement provided to POLITICO America, “After inciting a deadly insurrection and staining the halls of Congress, how dare Trump show up for these reasons? When it is known that he has no respect for democracy, Congressional Republicans People allow him to waltz in here. Since January 6, twice-impeached felon Donald Trump has repeatedly shown an escalating disrespect for the rule of law and continues to spread hatred and division against us. ‘s democracy poses the same dire threat as it did three years ago, and it would be wise to return to Mar-a-Lago and await sentencing.
The common reaction among Democrats to Trump’s return to the Capitol is that this kind of threat to democracy has no place anywhere near Congress, and Republicans are showing exactly why they deserve to lose their House majority. The Biden campaign responded to Trump’s visit with an ad reminding swing state voters what Trump did and tried to do to the country on January 6, 2021.
It’s encouraging that Democrats won’t allow Donald Trump to normalize. Trump is not a former president or presumptive party nominee who has visited the Capitol. Donald J. Trump is a convicted felon seeking to overthrow the U.S. government that Republicans support and invite back to the Capitol.
Rep. Thompson is correct. Donald Trump is as great a threat to democracy today as he was on 1/6. If the felony conviction makes Trump even more eager to regain power at all costs.
Democrats should waste no opportunity during the campaign to constantly remind voters who Donald Trump is and what he has done.
The convicted felon needs to go home, play golf and hope a Manhattan judge doesn’t lock him up.
