JaMarcus Russell, who spent three years in the NFL, was removed from an Alabama high school coaching staff after allegedly embezzling funds.
Russell is a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, Williamson High School in Mobile. A lawsuit says Russell took a check for $74,000 that was earmarked for a donation to the high school.
A spokesperson for Mobile County Public Schools confirmed that the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft has been “relieved of his volunteer coaching duties” in 2023.

“JaMarcus Russell was relieved of his position as volunteer coach at Williamson High School last fall,” school officials told WKRG Sports.
The owner of a local construction company said Russell contacted him and said the donation would help the football team purchase weight room equipment.

The former NFL quarterback is accused of depositing the check into a credit union and then withdrawing approximately $55,000. Navigator Credit Union is now suing Russell for $55,000 in damages, according to the lawsuit.
Mobile County Public Schools officials noted that Russell was also banned from the high school campus. However, Russell appeared to violate the restrictions when he attended a recent rugby team event.
“Earlier this week, we reiterated to Mr. Russell that he was not allowed to be around the football program or on campus,” the district said in a statement to WKRG.
Russell came to prominence on the back of a stellar performance at LSU. He finished his college football career with 6,625 passing yards and 52 touchdowns.
But his experience in the NFL was widely considered disappointing. He played 25 games in three years as the Raiders’ starting quarterback, finishing his career with 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.
