Angel Reese may only be a WNBA rookie, but she’s already trying to round out the Chicago Sky’s roster by recruiting players.
Rees took to social media to ask former Sky player Gabby Williams, who currently plays in Turkey, if she wanted to reunite in Chicago after her incredible performance at the Olympics for host country France. Williams scored a team-high 19 points to lead France to a thrilling 67-66 victory over the United States and another Olympic gold medal.
“Okay, the game is over, would you like to separate? [sic] Chicago Sky again? @gabbywilliams15 (thought it couldn’t hurt to try lmaoo),” Reese posted on X.

However, Williams’ response cast a shadow over Sky.
“Orrrrr, we can play for different organizations together,” Williams initially responded. Reese ended up writing “sigh” with an emoji, and then Williams explained a little bit about why she wanted to play elsewhere.
“They did dirty girl to me,” Williams replied with emojis. “But I’m still you [sic] Biggest fan.

As more teary-eyed emojis appeared, Reese tried to tell Williams “They’re not here anymore, but okay, I get it.”
“Thank you, sister! See you soon!” Reese wrote back.
Williams’ stellar performance in the Olympics has made her a hot name, as Reese isn’t the only one trying to recruit her back to the WNBA. Los Angeles Sparks forward Dilica Hamby responded on X, “I asked Gabby first,” after seeing the exchange between the Sky rookie and the French star.
Williams entered the WNBA as a star player at the University of Connecticut in 2018 and won back-to-back national championships with Geno Auriemma’s teams in 2015 and 2016. But three years later, she was traded to the Sparks.
The last time we saw Williams in the WNBA was with the Seattle Storm in 2023, she finally explained why she wasn’t playing in the league.
“I would love to join the WNBA because it’s the best women’s basketball league in the world, the most competitive and the highest skill level, but it’s still far away,” she told The Next Hoops last month.
“Unfortunately, it’s not very rewarding. So I’m glad there are other options to support me and my family.”
Because they can find better salaries overseas, many WNBA players will continue to play in the offseason after the league ends its season.
It’s worth noting, however, that the WNBA has recently struck positive financial deals, including $2.2 billion worth of media rights deals with ABC, ESPN/Disney, NBC and Amazon to broadcast its games.
The league will also expand in the coming years, with the Golden State Valkyrie team to be introduced in 2025, followed by the Toronto franchise in 2026.

Williams decided to stay and play in Europe, but now that the world has seen what she did for France to win a silver medal, maybe WNBA teams will try to get her back in the United States like Reese and others did.
