each planet of the apes “Reboot” plays a central character in the conflict between super-intelligent apes and the remnants of humanity. For newly released kingdom, Our human agent is Mae, represented by wizard’s Freya Allen. Although she initially looks like a regular feral human, as seen previously, she cannot speak. War for the Planet of the Apes— It turns out that Mae is not what she seems: she’s smart and can talk like a modern human, something Noah (played by Teague himself) has never seen before.
Working with hollywood reporter, Allen touched on a number of topics, including exposing May’s intelligence. In interviews, she admitted that she was fully prepared to lie about this aspect of her character, which director Wes Ball also wanted to keep secret. She said it was a “shame” to reveal this in the latest trailer, but she still hopes it will catch viewers off guard, just like Noah and his companion Raka did.
For those early moments in which May looks like an ordinary wild animal, Allen draws on moments from her childhood pretending to be animals. The idea was to give Mae a balance between not becoming the “too perfect” wild impersonator she heard in her coming-of-age stories and the “rabbit in the headlights” so she wouldn’t arouse suspicion. With the help of athletic coordinator Alain Gauthier, Allen gave May physical attributes similar to those of other wild humans, but not quite the same. “She’s not feral, and she doesn’t know much about them. She hasn’t actually met one yet [until early act two],”she says. “So you need to see those little moments where you’re like, ‘She’s not like everyone else.'”
In the second half of the second act, it’s revealed that not only is Mei not feral, she’s part of a small group of humans who want to destroy human technology locked away in a vault at the heart of the ape king Prometheus’ kingdom. She accomplished this by flooding the vault before escaping, but when she and Noah met again at Noah’s house, she eventually revealed in conversation that she was carrying a gun and was ready to use it on him Its well prepared.
Allen called the scene “very different” from how it was originally shot: Initially, Noah turned around and she would point the gun at the back of his head while he spoke. “You think, ‘Oh my gosh, is she going to shoot him?’ May was crying as she did it, thinking, ‘Am I going to shoot him? ‘ And then she didn’t. As soon as he mentioned To Raqqa’s name, she put down the gun, which was changed in the edit to feel “more subtle,” a choice she advocated as it would create a darker dynamic in future films.
“Mei is going there to kill someone. [Noa] Because he scared her,” she continued. “His intelligence scared her. She didn’t want to kill him, but she felt she had to. In that moment, she couldn’t. She did a lot of cruel things, but she couldn’t pull the trigger. So this became A very touching farewell, full of tragic and lingering doom. That’s what I shot, but that’s the wonderful thing about editing. You can change it to make it more interpretable.
For Allen, May’s actions throughout the film are both carefully planned and thought on the fly. She says that following Noah and finally speaking was planned, but being besieged by Proximus’ men sped up the last part faster than expected. In other moments, May knew her mission would be easier if Noah and his tribe were on her side, she just had to stay focused. A real camaraderie can be seen between them, which could illustrate how humans and apes can coexist, but ultimately, “she has her own motivations and they’re not on the same team.” […] What else should she do? Just tell him directly that she wants to reconnect with humanity on the entire planet? Obviously not.
modern great ape The movies won’t be bringing back human characters, but it sounds like the new series of movies will continue to have May as the central character (if they ever get made). Allen hopes to continue playing May just to see where she, Noah, and the other characters go next. “Everything they knew was completely challenged,” she said. “I really wanted to see how they applied what they learned and how they dealt with it.” What they experienced affected them. . I’d love to come back.
