Former AIG Women’s Open champion Georgia Hall says the British Open’s return to St Andrews will be a “great links test” and makes it a “priority” ahead of a busy summer for women’s golf.
Hall, who got her big break at Royal Lytham six years ago, is excited about the challenge of this year’s AIG Women’s Open.
This will be the first major event to be held in St Andrews since the historic R&A Clubhouse underwent a major refurbishment.
“This is the birthplace of golf and it’s my favorite place to be,” Hall said while speaking at the annual Golf Media Days in St. Andrews from August 22 to 25. sky sports golf. “I love it here and I think it’s going to be a great major.”
“I think the turnout is going to be amazing,” Hall, 28, said. “I know the R&A will set the course up to be a great test for us and I hope we get some windy weather so it’s a real link test for everyone involved.
“From a personal standpoint, it’s great to have family and friends come out and support me, and I don’t get a lot of that on the LPGA.”
Hall, who first played at St Andrews as an amateur, said the place brought back happy memories for him, saying: “I was 16 and that was a long time ago, but winning the silver medal gave me Having my dad caddy for me was pretty special but when the wind blows the course can get really tough.
“I remember the first two rounds I was paired with Laura Davies, so she was just British Idol. It was a great experience for me. It was very special and it couldn’t come soon enough.”
“What I learned is that it’s really hard to win majors – you can’t back down on Sunday,” Hall added. “The tournament is over but everyone wants to win here and not just have a regular Open because St Andrews is the home of golf.
“Links golf suits me better than any other type of golf. You need a natural, a certain imagination on the greens, and the speeds are much slower here, which suits me.
“I’m just going to be as prepared as possible. I need to improve my putting and have a good mentality.
“This is a priority. This is the biggest event in women’s golf.”
