A Georgia man was shot and killed by police on Sunday after he was found brandishing a gun near a gas station in Athens, officials said.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, around 1:20 a.m. Sunday, Athens-Clarke County police responded to a report of a man brandishing a “machine gun” near the intersection of Lexington Road and Gaines School Road.
When police arrived, they saw the suspect, 26-year-old Marquavious Sims, inside a Verizon store before crossing the street to the parking lot of a QuickTrip gas station.
Sims was chased by police and asked to drop his gun. But at one point during the brief chase, Sims fired at the pursuing officers. The two officers returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times.

Officers on scene provided emergency medical assistance to the suspect until emergency medical technicians arrived.
Sims was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
No police officers were injured in the incident.
Athens-Clarke County Police have asked the GBI to investigate the officer-involved shooting.

The two officers involved in Sunday’s shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the GBI investigation into the incident.
Sims’ body will be sent to the GBI Crime Laboratory in Decatur, Georgia for an autopsy.
Once the investigation is completed, it will be turned over to the Clark County District Attorney’s Office for review.
