Google I/O 2024 finally takes place on Tuesday, becoming the next technology event to take center stage after Apple’s iPad event last week. Commentators expect Google to make a series of announcements, including the release of a new Android 15 update, a progress report on its artificial intelligence chatbot Gemini, and news about the next-generation Pixel Fold.
Luckily, you don’t have to travel all the way to Silicon Valley to keep up with the latest happenings. Here’s how to watch Google I/O no matter where you are.
Google I/O 2024: What to expect
What is Google I/O?
Google I/O is the tech giant’s annual developer conference in the United States. The annual event was originally called Google Developer Days when it was first held in 2007, before being renamed Google I/O the following year, a moniker it has stuck with to this day.
“googol is a 1 followed by 100 zeros, so that’s where the I/O name and logo came from,” Google U.S. events director Lorin Platto explained last year. “We only took the first 1 and 0 and ignored all the other 0s. It all comes back to Google.”
The conference includes numerous lectures and workshops that provide developers with advice on how to use Google products. However, the average person is primarily interested in two conferences: the Google Keynote and the Developer Keynote. Since Google I/O has been a platform for large product launches in the past, any major announcements are likely to happen during these conferences. Google I/O has previously been used to launch Android, Google Assistant, and Google Home.

Where is Google I/O 2024?
The 2024 Google I/O conference will be held at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. The Shoreline Amphitheater is an outdoor venue that can accommodate 22,500 people, but Google said this year’s event will have only “a small number of live audiences.” Google I/O has been held at Shoreline Amphitheater almost every year since 2016, with the exception of being canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then moving entirely online in 2021.
Since then, the annual conference has been held both in person and online, allowing developers from around the world to attend for free.
