“I worked late because my demo failed” will become Google’s version of the song of the summer, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso.”
Today’s Made by Google event unveiled a slew of new hardware and software, including the long-awaited new Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Buds Pro 2. And comes with tons of AI-driven features. Artificial intelligence has been the focus of today’s keynote, even for a hardware-focused event.
In the first half-hour of today’s Made by Google event, Google tried to show off new and improved features of its Gemini mobile artificial intelligence. The first live demo attempted to have Gemini scan and analyze photos of Sabrina Carpenter’s upcoming tour dates to see if she would be coming to San Francisco. The host said before the trial that all of today’s presentations will be live broadcast and hoped that the presentation gods would be with them today. They are not. When the presentation failed, the live audience and thousands of virtual attendees watched with rapt attention.

After a second failed attempt and switching to a new device, Gemini finally succeeded. While live demos are always at risk of technical glitches or errors, the rest of the live demos at the event ran fairly smoothly. Still, the anticipation and trepidation of that first demo was certainly a memorable moment from the event, especially since it began with the announcement that it was in the “Gemini Age.”
