In a call with reporters, the Biden administration discussed the impact of the Dobbs ruling and the steps they are taking to protect reproductive freedoms.
What the Biden administration is doing to protect reproductive freedoms
Jen Klein, assistant to the president and director of the Gender Policy Council, told PoliticusUSA on a call with reporters.
Of course, as you know, we are defending women’s right to emergency care in the Supreme Court, and we expect a ruling soon. Second, we take action to protect FDA-approved safe and effective medical abortion. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court rejected a challenge to the FDA’s ability to regulate medical abortion. Mifepristone, a drug approved by the FDA as safe and effective more than 20 years ago, is still available and approved for use, but attacks on medical abortion continue in states, courts, and Congress as part of the Republican electoral campaign Officials pursue an extreme and dangerous agenda to ban abortion nationwide, and the Biden-Harris administration will continue to defend access to safe and effective medicines.
The third is to strengthen privacy protection. In April, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a new rule to strengthen reproductive health care privacy under HIPAA because no one should have their medical records used against them simply because they are seeking or receiving legitimate reproductive care. themselves, their doctors, or their loved ones. Last year, the FDA approved the first daily oral contraceptive pill for over-the-counter use, a historic change.
The government also expanded contraceptive coverage at no cost under the Affordable Care Act, strengthened contraceptive coverage through Title 10 programs, and improved contraceptive access for active duty military members and veterans through cost reductions and walk-in clinics choose. Finally, we support national partners on the front lines of the defensive and proactive fight to ensure access to reproductive health care. Of course, Vice President Harris has been a leader in this effort, traveling to more than 20 states and meeting with more than 250 state legislators, health care providers and advocates in the past year alone. This is just part of what the Biden-Harris administration is doing to defend reproductive freedom.
The last thing I would say is that this administration believes that health care decisions should be made by a woman and her doctor, not politicians, as we have recently in Ohio and before in Michigan, California, Kentucky, Vermont, As we’ve seen in Kansas and Montana, in every state where abortion is on the ballot, the American people have voted overwhelmingly to protect reproductive freedoms, so President Biden and Vice President Harris will continue to fight. , until we restore Roe v. Wade protections in federal law for all women in every state.
Biden is fighting to protect reproductive freedoms
The President is using all executive powers within the law to protect reproductive freedoms. The steps taken by the Biden administration haven’t received much, if any, coverage in the mainstream media, but they are important for doing everything possible to protect women’s rights.
The best way for Americans to protect their reproductive rights is to vote for the Democratic candidate in November. Biden can’t do this alone. As Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., said Sunday, Democrats are ready to step up and get the job done. They just need voters to give them the power to make it happen.
Dobbs’ second anniversary is not a time to give up, but a time to work harder.
