Can you believe it’s been 10 years since Netflix last made a major change to its interface? The new redesigned TV app will roll out to select users on Thursday. This is a new Netflix, targeting a new realm of streaming, no longer just focused on movies and shows, but live sports and even video games.
The first thing you might notice is that the TV app redesign removes the left-most vertical menu. In its place is a smaller horizontal menu at the top of the app with simplified options, including Home, Shows, Movies, and My Netflix. The latter tab was first added to the mobile app version and is now coming to TVs as well. If you press the back button on your remote, you should be immediately returned to the top menu column. Tabs such as “New & Popular” and “My List” have disappeared. The Categories menu is still there, but you now have to find it in the search function.
The larger changes become apparent once you hover over the individual tiles. Press and hold each tile for a while and it will start playing a clip from the show or movie, while giving the user a text description and more information, such as the total running time. Otherwise, Netflix will still push algorithmically suggested Discover content front and center in the Home tab. Shows and Movies will also discover content based on whether you or Netflix knows what your friends like to watch.
Pat Flemming, senior director of product experience at Netflix, told Gizmodo that the streaming company wanted to make navigating the app easier and clearer. He said that in Netflix’s product research, they found that users were “doing gymnastics with their eyes” and had to look around the screen for descriptions, trailers, ratings, etc. of each show or movie. There should be more content in each tile.
“When you evaluate a particular movie, series or game in the future, you already have all this information,” he said.
The “What’s New” tab will still appear in the mobile app, but Netflix hopes the new version will simplify things for people who don’t know what to watch every night. Let’s face it, how often do you think you should be checking your “What’s New” menu?
To be fair, things have changed a lot from a decade ago, when Netflix still primarily distributed movies and shows from other companies. yes it is Definitely more expensive More than in years past, but that’s not all. Netflix is still trying to grab popular movies like the recently added Godzilla: minus one and 1917. Netflix has more original content, like slow-burn horror movies warder and adaptations of science fiction novels 3 physical problems. Currently, original content accounts for more than half of the anchor’s total content.
But now it’s more than that. Netflix is trying to get into live sports with a few Fake live sports events, WWE streaming,as well as Just postponed Big name fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. Let us not forget that there is a There are some good games on Netflix. While the ongoing test program has a limited number of TV shows, it represents an increasingly large part of Netflix’s current expansion plans. Will Netflix eventually add more tabs to the top bar, like “Sports” and “Games,” to appear alongside “Shows” and “Movies”? Fleming said that’s “to be determined,” although he said, “You’re thinking about it in a very intuitive way.”
The new app version is being tested with a small number of select subscribers, who will contribute back before Netflix considers rolling out the update more broadly. As for whether this signals more changes to come for the mobile or online versions, Fleming isn’t ready to say yes or no. After all, first of all, we need every other streaming service to copy Netflix again before someone starts reinventing the wheel.
