California Department of Transportation officials announced this week that the next phase of repairs to stabilize the Rocky Creek Bridge on Highway 1 in Big Sur will close the two-lane highway again, but only overnight. between.
Caltrans said in an update that starting Monday, a damaged section of the road about 12 miles south of Carmel will be partially closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily, with traffic expected to be delayed by an hour. This work will continue until Thursday 25 July.
“Crews will use these partial closures to reposition existing K rails and place temporary medians to allow for construction activities in the southbound lanes,” Caltrans officials said.
Caltrans officials said the road will be fully closed next week, from July 28 to August 1, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for repair work. Officials said further closures are expected to be needed intermittently after that week.
The agency said there will be no overnight work scheduled on Friday or Saturday nights.
On March 30, part of the southbound lane of Highway 1 collapsed during heavy rain, causing the road surface to collapse into the sea. The accident initially closed the section of road for several weeks.
One lane of the damaged stretch of road was reopened to the public in mid-May, with vehicles taking turns traveling in opposite directions via alternate traffic signals.
Significant work still needs to be done to reopen both lanes. Caltrans officials said the necessary repairs are expected to be completed next summer.
Meanwhile, other damaged sections of Highway 1 have been closed since January 2023. A stretch of road nearby. The blockade began near Lime Kiln State Park to the south.
Caltrans spokesman Kevin Drabinski said repairs are underway on the Regent Slide, the largest landslide to close that section of road.
Drabinski said last month that Caltrans hopes to reopen the southern segment by late fall.
